A button doesn't respond when pressed, or only triggers under heavy pressure. Most people either put up with it or buy a new controller.
But before replacing anything, there's a diagnostic sequence that tells you which layer the problem is on. And in nine out of ten cases, you don't need a new controller.
Step One: Confirm the OS Recognises the Controller
This is the most basic step and the one most often skipped.
Open your system's device settings and confirm the controller is recognised. If the operating system doesn't see it, the problem isn't the button — it's the connection or driver layer. No browser test tool can help you there, because they depend on the system exposing the controller first.
This step rules out an entire category of problems: poor cable contact, Bluetooth pairing issues, missing drivers.
Step Two: Rule Out Middleware Interference
If you have Steam installed, it may take over controller input by default. Other controller managers, macro tools, and emulators can do the same thing.
These layers convert your controller input into their own mapping before passing it on. The result: some buttons may be remapped, blocked, or merged into combos.
The most direct verification: close those programs, reload the test page, and press that button again.
If it works normally after closing them, the problem is software configuration, not hardware.
Step Three: Test Every Button in the Browser
Open a browser-based gamepad tester and press every button, one at a time.
The value of this step is distinguishing "no response at all" from "abnormal response":
No response at all — pressing produces no change in values. Could be a hardware fault or a mapping issue.
Response but unstable values — values appear but jump around or arrive late. Could be contact oxidation or slight wear.
Only responds under heavy pressure — light presses do nothing, hard presses trigger. Usually points to a physical contact problem.
These three cases lead to different directions, so categorise first, then judge.
Step Four: Cross-Verify in Another Environment
If a button doesn't respond in one browser, don't jump to conclusions.
Test again in a different browser. Test again over USB. If the button works after switching environments, the problem was in the original environment — browser compatibility, drivers, or connection method.
Only when the same button fails across multiple environments does hardware failure become genuinely likely.
Step Five: Separate "Button Problem" from "Mapping Problem"
This one matters especially.
Some buttons appear normal to the system — they're just mapped somewhere else. Certain controllers' back paddles and extra shoulder buttons may not send standard button signals by default, requiring additional configuration to be recognised.
So before declaring "this button is broken," confirm it's supposed to be recognised by the browser in the first place. Check the controller's official documentation, or look at whether it responds in your system's device test screen.
A Practical Principle
The diagnostic order should be: outside in, software to hardware.
Confirm system recognition, rule out middleware, test button by button, then cross-verify across environments.
The benefit of this order: each step rules out an entire category of possibilities at very low cost. By the time hardware genuinely needs consideration, you've already eliminated most other causes.
Most cases of "button not responding" turn out to be software-level issues. Running through this sequence first can save you a fair amount of money.
